Girls' Club
The Girls' Club began as a passion of Carolyn Myer's to provide new opportunities for the girls in the Old South Baton Rouge area. The Girls' Club is a community based educational program for girls 8-15 years of age and is designed to promote educational, emotional, spiritual and social growth. The opportunity the club presents provides a positive place for girls and provides the opportunity to meet and make new friends.
For young girls, adolescence is an exciting yet confusing time thrusting them from childhood into puberty and adulthood. Whether girls make this transition in a positive way depends on their sense of identity, self-esteem, social skills, setting goals and respect for themselves and others. During this time, girls begin to look inside themselves for the first time to confirm an identity and develop individuality. At the same time, there are emerging self doubts and a need for positive reinforcements from their peer groups. They are searching for independence, but are still very dependent on support from their families, peer groups and friends.
A Year of Success
The Girls' Club was a success! Throughout the year 47 girls learned many things they only had a little taste for. Now they have a hunger to learn more-more about the world around them and more about themselves. The theme for the school year was that nothing in life is free. The girls learned that if they chose to engage in drugs and alcohol that they would suffer consequences such as cancer from cigarettes or sudden death from sniffing or huffing paint. The Girls' Club also learned about the importance of eating healthy and exercising so that they will have a life of good health. With the holioday season in full swing, the girls gave back to the troops by sending a care package to women from Louisiana and writing letters of thanks.
After giving to the troops the girls then learned how to set goals for themselves through New Years resolutions. This set the tone for the year, continuing the theme that nothing comes free because they learned about the hard work and dedication it takes to achieve those goals. This was further reinforced through learning manners so that they can work with others. They are also working on dream boxes. The girls were able to learn how to treat people with more respect and learn self-control from Cindy Huber of The Buttlefly Effect. These exercises proved we must give respect if we are to get respect in return. The girls learned that we are free to make choices. The girls learned they can choose to educate themselves and break destructive cycles that may be in their families.
It is our wish to continue serving both the Buchanan Elementary community as well as returning to Saturday meetings to reach more young girls in the Baton Rouge community in need.
